Gambling Laws

The gambling laws in Maryland seem too unusual at first glance; however, a number of gambling forms are allowed. The state defines gambling as the playing of a game by a patron of a gaming establishment.

By gaming establishment, it means a premise that is approved under a gaming license. The law further states that if the commission does not approve the game, it is illegal.

Web-based gambling in Maryland is not addressed directly. This does not make it legal, nor does it make it illegal. The state does, however, allow residents to gamble legally on the internet through a few options. Playing at safe and regulated offshore casino sites is probably the best way players can place bets online.

History of Gambling

The first form of gambling in Maryland was in the form of church lotteries in 1791. In 1834 the state made efforts to reign in the lotteries by trying to stop the issuing of new licenses. The state later made all forms of betting illegal.

The racing board was formed and slots boomed after control power was passed down to the counties. Later, a law that stopped the renewal of slot machine licenses was passed. The state lottery began its reign in 1973 and has to date generated billions of US dollars in revenue.

The installation of video lottery terminals, also known as slots, was approved by voters using a constitutional referendum. Again, a referendum legalized casino games in Maryland. This led to the state hosting the first USD 1 million live poker tournament. Other games that were made legal include daily fantasy sports.

Regulatory Bodies in Maryland

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Agency regulates all gaming in Maryland. The commission controls the Maryland lottery and electronic gaming devices. It also controls the casino games according to the gaming laws in the state.
